House of Dreams – Pleasure abounds at Casa de los Suenos in Puerto Vallarta

Smug. It’s not an emotion I’m particularly tapped into.

But, in the heat of June, I watched people parading on the malecon (or boardwalk) from my vantage point in the shade of the palapa of the swim up bar, from the deliciously cool pool, and met the longing glances of the thirsty masses clutching warm water bottles with a smile and a feeling of immense pleasure. From the pool bar, my friend Alicia and I indulged in a freshly blended drink and hand-diced guacamole at the swim up bar. I felt like I had been welcomed into a secret club where only 20 or so other people received invitations.

The pool, nestled serenely in a Type A, lovingly pedicured garden, is deceivingly long. Take a few laps in the sparkling clear water and you’ll know what I mean. Loungers, both in the shade and sun, offer a place to enhance your tan. If you tire of floating or swimming, you can enjoy a spectacular sea view, complete with sunset view, from the private beach area, just a few steps across the malecon.

Upstairs, Casa de los Suenos, in an upscale, gated community at the south end of the boardwalk, is a haven from the vibrant city that is Puerto Vallarta. Inside, cool limestone floors and powerful air conditioning are a welcome reprieve from the hot season. But much of the year you’ll be happy to have the floor to ceiling doors open to capture the sea breeze.

Paty, the manager of Casa del los Suenos and other properties, is a gem. She’ll greet you, answer questions, and show you around your new home away from home. She’ll also do a departure check out, where you will instantly get your deposit back. As we were leaving in the pre-dawn darkness, she phoned our taxi driver and came running out with my Kindle, something I would have been very unhappy to have found missing on my flights home.

Three bedrooms and three bathrooms make the perfect retreat for families. The condo association is concerned with keeping the integrity of the building away from the party atmosphere, so they only rent to families in weekly increments. Our week there was utterly peaceful.

Designer touches in the heart of Puerto Vallarta were a complete joy. We both felt we could stay much longer in the home, spread out over 3000 square feet. While the first two bedrooms are on par with an above average hotel room, the master suite is a divine luxury, complete with soaking tub with mountain views.

While we ate out mostly, the kitchen is a chef’s playground. Be sure to hit the market if you want to cook fresh, flavorful, healthy food. One of our favorite parts of the experience of staying in this particular vacation rental was the proximity to absolutely everything. Just across the boardwalk was a private beach with chairs just for our building. To the right was the main part of the malecon, and to the left, places to eat on the beach – where you can dig your toes in the sand and listen to the surf while you sip a margarita.

Just a few blocks back, we found a bit of the undiscovered Puerto Vallarta – unique boutiques, incredible restaurants and eclectic artist galleries. Wandering was a decadent pleasure. We didn’t take a taxi once.

It was all at our feet. There are plenty of massage therapy spas within easy walk. Check ahead of time to make sure that the temperature is to your liking – we experienced one that was far too hot for comfort. When we rebooked, we asked that they turn the air up for our next appointment, which they did. Perfection at a true bargain price – something we indulged in a few times during our week’s stay at the lovely Casa de los Suenos.

The days flowed into an easy rhythm. Sleep in, fix a quick breakfast of fruit and yogurt and coffee, then spend the afternoon at the aqua pool. Lunch was freshly prepared at the pool bar (note- the pool bar closes in the off-season.)

Late afternoons and evenings were for strolling. We explored new shops, found dresses and jewelry we were happy to wear there and at home, and indulged at a different restaurant each night, often with a view of the sunset. Just a few blocks to the left of the vacation rental, you’ll find a pier where locals and tourists gather to swim, watch the sunset, and take photos.

Casa de los Suenos, a wonderful place to relax, refresh and renew body and soul.  The perfect place to stay when you visit Puerto Vallarta.
