La Palapa – Dining with an Alluring View

One step inside La Palapa Restaurant and you know you are in for one memorable night. A seasoned traveler proclaimed “If you only had one restaurant to choose from in Puerto Vallarta, this is definitely it.” This place has it all. Ambience, charm, innovative mouthwatering cuisine, and yes, magic. Romance is in the air at La Palapa. Located on Playa los Muertos in the Romantic Zone of Old Vallarta, La Palapa literally means “thatched roof.” And it is perfectly fitting. Amber colored chandeliers cast a warm glow over the tables inside the open-air dining room. Casual tropical elegance just steps from the beach. Talented musicians serenade diners nightly with jazz, rhythm and blues, and flamenco sounds.

Outside seating features linen covered, candlelit tables in the sand under an extended palapa. Diners with their feet in the sand and cocktails in hand breathe in the warm balmy air. The sun is setting in the distance as palm trees sway softly in the breeze.

Two tables, strategically placed near the water offer a private dining experience second to none. A candlelit path guides diners to their seats. Tiki torches add tropical enchantment. The sunset over the horizon sets the sky ablaze with splashes of color. Anchored fishing boats sway with the movement of the tide.

Mountains tower in the distance and city lights begin to twinkle softly. The soothing sound of waves gently caresses the shore. An attentive waiter offers a cocktail from an extensive beverage menu to whet the palate. Pinch me, is this just a dream?

But, it just keeps getting better. The food is tantalizingly diverse and delectable. Appetizer selections read like a tapas menu with thirteen offerings ranging from soups, salads to other delectable delights. The tempting main entrees feature gourmet Mexican cuisine with a slight Asian twist.

Though seafood is the more prevalent offering, other equally enticing menu options make for a difficult decision. But, at La Palapa, there are no wrong choices. The shrimp with guanabana, a tropical fruit with strawberry banana taste topped with coconut sauce, accompanied with corn and potato mash and crispy plantains titillated the palate. The pork tenderloin encrusted with goat cheese, chorizo, pecans and topped with a chile mulato sauce was grilled to perfection and exploded with flavor. Entrees are ushered out by smiling waiters eager to see diners’ reactions to their magnificent presentations.

The chef’s sampler of Mexican desserts accompanied by a flaming Mexican coffee perfectly closes out a magical, enchanted evening. It is no secret that La Palapa bewitches and beguiles all who dine here. One experience will never be enough. Returning travelers wanting to try something new instead find themselves once again answering the siren’s call of La Palapa’s charms. I know we did.
